Fire Event
April 9, 2009
A strong storm system moved into Oklahoma during the afternoon, pushing a dry line east of I-35. This boundary marked warm and moist air to the east, from hot and dry air to the west. Winds to the west of the dry line were from the southwest and west at 20-40mph, with higher gusts. These winds and hot temperatures combined with dry ground and semi-dormant vegetation to create an environment favorable for rapid wildfire growth.
Additionally, storms developed along the dry line in eastern Oklahoma. Severe tornadoes were confirmed in the state Thursday afternoon with damage to homes and outbuildings.
