December 19, 2006 Winter Storm Brings Ice, Snow to Panhandle
This week's ice storm in the state's Panhandle, marked a good reminder that Oklahomans need to remain winter weather prepared at their home, business and in their vehicles.
A strong storm system moved across the Panhandle and far northwest sections of the state Dec. 19-20. The system brought ice to the area on Dec. 19, followed by snow overnight into Dec. 20. The remainder of Oklahoma received 1-2 inches of rainfall. Light snowfall fell in northern Oklahoma as the storm system moved northeast Wednesday night. The storm left about 900 residents and businesses without electric power, mainly in Guymon and Goodwell. Travel was discouraged where icy roads made for slick and hazardous conditions. Residents in the affected area were urged to stay home and check on neighbors, especially the elderly, and take care of their pets.
When severe winter weather strikes, always heed the advice of public safety and transportation officials. If you must drive, please allow plenty of extra time, slow down and keep enough distance between you and other vehicles, especially road crew vehicles as they apply sand and salt. Also, before leaving for your destination, let someone know your travel plans, including the route you will be taking. That way they can retrace your path if you fail to arrive at your destination.
