Winter Weather Event
January 26 - 27, 2009
On January 26, 2009, a storm system in the southwest U.S. moved towards Oklahoma resulting in widespread freezing rain. The freezing rain occurred as warm moist Gulf of Mexico air was lifted over a shallow dome of cold Arctic air at the surface. Initially liquid, the rain turned to ice when reaching exposed objects. Widespread travel problems occurred across Oklahoma. The I-44 corridor received 1/4 to 1/2 inches of freezing rain, with higher amounts. 1-2 inches of sleet occurred on top of this ice. Just south of this area 3-4 inches of sleet occurred with freezing rain farther south from McAlester to Stillwell where 1-1.5 inches of freezing rain occurred.
