English Language Arts
This page supports Oklahoma teachers and school districts with the successful implementation of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts. The Oklahoma State Department of Education collaborates with Oklahoma educators to develop and identify high-quality resources for teachers and districts. Oklahoma resources include the English Language Arts Framework, past professional development slideshows, writing contest information, and access to instructional communities for professional growth.
High-Quality Instructional Materials
To provide guidance to teachers, schools, and districts as they make decisions about the best high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) for their students, the OSDE now has reviews of PK-5 & 6-12 ELA instructional materials. The reviews include scores and rationales to help inform stakeholders as they decide which materials to adopt. Blank rubrics for ELA Grades PK-2, 3-5, and 6-12 are also available if districts would like to conduct their own reviews. The three-tiered structure of the rubric and the three overall ratings are explained on the Approved Titles page.

Science of Reading Training for Teachers in Grades 4-8
- This training consists of multiple learning modules from Ashlock Consulting that will help teachers in grades 4-8 learn how to teach literacy skills to their students.
- By learning about phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, summarizing, and inferences, teachers will gain the knowledge and confidence to assist their students who lack foundational reading skills.
- The asynchronous modules will total a minimum of 15 hours of learning spread across the fall semester of 2024.
- Participants will be required to attend 3 virtual meetings throughout the semester to reinforce their learning.
- Participants will receive a physical copy of the Reading Strategy and Skill Resource with Knowledge Connections book.
After completing the coursework, participants will receive a certificate and access to additional learning modules and resources.
August 2024 Update: The initial cohort of teachers has been identified. A new group of ELA teachers will go through the course starting in January 2025.
