Competencies
Mathematics Competencies
Competencies provide a pathway for teachers who are looking to guide their students to the next mathematical level. Competencies are available for those schools/districts that have not already established competencies for Math of Finance and Intermediate Algebra. Statistics & Probability, Precalculus, and Trigonometry standards are now included in the 2022 Oklahoma Academic Standards for Mathematics.
The competency committee members looked at existing competencies within and outside of our state, Oklahoma high school and college course syllabi, vertical alignment documents, our Oklahoma Academic Standards for Mathematics, and the NCTM Essential Understandings for High School Mathematics to determine which essential skills should be included in our Oklahoma competencies. What has resulted is guidance that will help our students be college and career ready.
Creative Writing Competencies
Competencies provide a pathway for teachers who are looking to guide their students to the next level when specific academic standards do not exist. Competencies are available for schools and districts that have not already established competencies for creative writing. Teachers of creative writing must hold a certificate in English.
These competencies are based on established expectations within the creative writing classrooms of Oklahoma as well as essential skills gleaned from other states. During the 2024-2025 school, every high school creative writing teacher in Oklahoma had the opportunity to provide feedback on these competencies. This guidance will help teachers to plan interesting and engaging creative writing courses for their students.
If you have any questions about the competencies, please email Jason Stephenson, Program Manager of Secondary Education, at Jason.Stephenson@sde.ok.gov.
Public Speaking Competencies
Competencies provide a pathway for teachers who are looking to guide their students to the next level. Competencies are available for those schools and districts that have not already established competencies for public speaking. Teachers of public speaking may hold a certificate in any subject area.
The competency committee members looked at existing competencies within and outside of our state to determine which essential skills should be included in our Oklahoma competencies. What has resulted is guidance that will help our students be college and career ready.
If you have any questions about the competencies, please email Dr. Elizabeth Maughan, Project Manager of Fine Arts, at Elizabeth.Maughan@sde.ok.gov or Jason Stephenson, Program Manager of Secondary Education, at Jason.Stephenson@sde.ok.gov.
Emerging Technologies & Artificial Intelligence Competencies
Competencies provide a pathway for teachers who are looking to guide their students to the next level. The Student Competencies for Emerging Technologies & Artificial Intelligence (AI) articulate what Oklahoma students should know and be able to do when engaging with modern intelligent technologies, from kindergarten through grade 12.
These competencies are intended to complement, not replace, the 2023 Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science (OAS-CS) by providing districts and teachers with clear, grade‑level learning targets that reflect current national trends in computer science education. Because the Oklahoma State Department of Education has not yet adopted additional AI standards legislatively, these competencies serve as a voluntary framework that districts may integrate into existing computer science (CS) courses or related STEM subjects.
If you have any questions about the competencies, please email Jeremy Maker Project Director of Computer Science, at Jeremy.Maker@sde.ok.gov.
