Physical Education
Schools can create an environment that offers many opportunities for students to be physically active throughout the school day. A comprehensive school physical activity program (CSPAP) is the national framework for physical education and youth physical activity. A CSPAP reflects strong coordination across five components: physical education, physical activity during school, physical activity before and after school, staff involvement, and family and community engagement. Physical education serves as the foundation of a CSPAP and is an academic subject characterized by a planned, sequential K-12 curriculum that is aligned with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Physical Education. In accordance with Maria's Law, mental health objectives were added to Standard 5 in the new standards.
Physical education provides cognitive content and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors for healthy active living, physical fitness, sportsmanship, self-efficacy, and emotional intelligence. A well-designed physical education program provides the opportunity for students to learn key concepts and practice critical skills needed to establish and maintain physically active lifestyles throughout childhood, adolescence and into adulthood.

Resources for Painted Play Spaces
Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) partnered with the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) to develop recess resources and support the implementation of 70 O.S. § 11-103.9.
Northern Hills Elementary, in Edmond Public Schools, was selected as a pilot school for the project. Stencils were used to paint recess games on the playground and ensure students 6 feet of separation while playing. The physical education teachers taught the games in physical education class before OSDE filmed the students playing the games. With the recordings, OSDE created demonstration videos on how to safely conduct physical activity opportunities before, during, and after school. UCO collaborated with Crescent, Justice, Tonkawa, and Wetumka Public Schools to paint games (with reusable stencils) on one playground in each school district. Paint and stencils will be purchased with grant funds. UCO and OSDE created the following resources for this project:
Painted Play Spaces: Playground Assessment and Planning Toolkit
Demonstration Videos of Recess Games
Painted Play Spaces Asynchronous Training Module on OSDE Connect
Painted Play Spaces (PPS): Stencils Checkout System
