The Office of AI and Digital Learning supports school leaders, educators, families, and communities in integrating innovative artificial intelligence and digital technologies into teaching and learning, ensuring Oklahoma students develop the digital literacy and technological fluency needed to be college, career, and citizen-ready in an increasingly connected world.
Oklahoma Responsible Technology in Schools Act
Recent legislation called the Oklahoma Responsible Technology in Schools Act (70 O.S. § 11-120) establishes a statewide framework for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies in Oklahoma public schools. The Act is designed to provide clarity, accountability, and consistency in the use of AI while protecting student privacy, preserving instructional integrity, and ensuring that technology enhances, rather than replaces, educator-led instruction.
The law requires that student-facing AI tools be used under educator direction and with appropriate human oversight. It also prohibits AI from serving as the primary basis for high-stakes decisions involving grading, discipline, placement, promotion, retention, or other educational determinations. Additionally, districts must provide annual parent and guardian notification regarding AI tools in use, student data practices, and educational purposes. Parents and guardians must be given the opportunity to opt their students out of eligible student-facing AI tools without academic penalty.
Beginning with the 2027-28 school year, each school district board of education must adopt and maintain a policy governing AI and emerging technologies that aligns with the requirements of the Oklahoma Responsible Technology in Schools Act.

Guidance for Using AI in Oklahoma K-12 Schools
The Oklahoma State Department of Education is excited to announce the release of the revised Guidance and Considerations for Using Artificial Intelligence in Oklahoma K–12 Schools (Version 3.0).
This comprehensive update reflects the rapidly evolving landscape of AI in education and provides clear, practical guidance for school leaders, educators, and technology teams across the state. The revised document offers enhanced frameworks for implementation, deeper support for responsible and equitable use, and updated tools to help schools align AI use with educational integrity, safety, and innovation.
The OSDE will provide virtual professional learning opportunities for educators and administrators to learn more about AI in education. This document is currently undergoing revision.
Model AI Policy for Districts
The Model AI Use Policy below provides Oklahoma school districts with a clear framework for integrating artificial intelligence tools responsibly and effectively. It balances innovation with safeguards for student privacy, academic integrity, and equitable access, while aligning with FERPA, COPPA, state cybersecurity standards, and OSDE guidance. The included templates, rubrics, and communication resources are designed to be adapted locally, helping districts implement AI in ways that are safe, transparent, and student-centered.
