Visiting International Teachers Program
Bringing international educators to Oklahoma classrooms strengthens language learning and expands global opportunities
Oklahoma’s international partnerships connect school districts with educators from France, Spain, Taiwan, and Mexico. These visiting teachers support instruction in the target language while bringing international perspectives and cultural knowledge to Oklahoma classrooms.
Interested in hosting a visiting teacher? Complete the District Interest Form to connect with Dr. Katelin Frantz and learn about potential opportunities.
District Participation
Participating districts must be prepared to:
- Provide target-language instruction. Visiting teachers must teach the language associated with their partnership: Spanish for teachers from Spain and Mexico, Chinese for teachers from Taiwan, and French for teachers from France. They may also teach in a dual-language setting.
- Provide comparable compensation and benefits. Districts are responsible for paying visiting teachers and providing the same benefits offered to Oklahoma teachers.
- Support successful placement. Districts should provide the instructional resources, onboarding, and workplace support needed for visiting teachers to succeed.
How the Process Works
The timeline and procedures may vary by international partnership. In general, districts can expect the following steps:
- Express interest. Complete the District Interest Form to identify your district's language-teaching needs and interest in hosting a visiting teacher.
- Connect with OSDE. Discuss your staffing needs, program requirements, and potential opportunities with OSDE.
- Coordinate recruitment and selection. Work with OSDE and the relevant international partner to identify candidates and participate in the selection and hiring process.
- Complete hiring and requirements. Finalize employment arrangements and coordinate required certification, visa, and other documentation.
- Prepare for arrival. Arrange onboarding, instructional resources, and school-based support to help the visiting teacher transition successfully into the district.
Planning must begin well in advance of the intended placement date, as recruitment, hiring, certification, and visa processes can take time.
