Criminal History Reporting Unit
The Criminal History Reporting Unit (CHRU) is responsible for responding to public (non-law enforcement) records requests. A fee is assessed for each name-based and fingerprint-based request. This service is used by the public and employers that are not authorized to conduct national fingerprint searches. Companies who routinely make large numbers of requests use the Criminal History Information Request Portal (CHIRP) that allows them to search and receive information electronically. Members of the general public also have access to CHIRP and can request a name-based criminal history record check electronically from anywhere. Other requests are received by mail, fax, or in person at the OSBI Headquarters lobby.
Name-based criminal history information requests generate about 3 million dollars per year for the OSBI. The employees of this unit have direct contact with the public through interaction by phone and in person. Name-based criminal history searches require the employees of CHRU to screen responses to identify the correct person.
In addition to criminal history information, the OSBI is authorized to conduct Mary Rippy Violent Offender and Sex Offender checks for its customers through the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Sex and Violent Offenders registries.
