SoonerCare’s Annual Tribal Consultation To Be Held In October

The Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) will host its 7th Annual Tribal Consultation meeting at the Hard Rock Hotel and Conference Center, 777 West Cherokee Street, Catoosa, on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tribal consultation is an opportunity for Oklahoma tribal leaders and their designees to receive updates and give input on various issues regarding SoonerCare (Oklahoma Medicaid). The annual meeting also serves as a launching point for new ideas and/or programs for the continued improvement of health care for American Indians in Oklahoma.

The consultation features key topics for the tribal community, including a discussion of the health-related goals for each tribal community and how SoonerCare can be a partner in achieving those goals; health care reform and upcoming changes to SoonerCare; the extension of Insure Oklahoma; and an examination of effective strategies for outreach and linkage to tribal citizens who are qualified for SoonerCare.

The morning session, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., will be an opportunity for tribal leaders to have open dialogue on health care efforts for the tribal citizens of Oklahoma. Nico Gomez, Chief Executive Officer of the OHCA and members of the agency’s executive staff will be present to provide needed information and participate in meaningful discussion with tribal leaders.

“OHCA values tremendously our partnerships with tribal governments in Oklahoma,” said Gomez. “It allows us the opportunity to work together to ensure our programs and services are responsive to the needs of tribal citizens who qualify for SoonerCare, and ultimately to improve health outcomes in the state.”

The afternoon session, 1 p.m.to 4 p.m., will be for all interested stakeholders, Indian Health Service (IHS)/Tribal/Urban (ITU) facility staff, and health care providers to give feedback on the SoonerCare program and the tribal health care system.
