Tribal Consultation
Background
The United States and the State of Oklahoma recognize tribal governments as sovereign nations and both enjoy a unique government-to-government relationship with tribal governments. As part of this relationship, the Oklahoma Health Care Authority strives to actively communicate and coordinate with tribal governments on matters pertinent to SoonerCare and tribal health. Federal law (Section 1902(a)(73 of the Social Security Act) also requires OHCA to consult with tribal governments when implementing new policies that may affect tribal members.
Purpose
The bi-monthly tribal policy consultation serves as a venue for discussion between OHCA and tribal governments on proposed SoonerCare policy changes, State Plan amendments, and waiver amendments.
Goals
The goal of the tribal policy consultation is to inform tribal governments of policy changes, seek their advice and input regarding those changes, and address any concerns that arise as a result of the proposed changes.
