OHCA Notifies SoonerCare Members About New Federal Work Requirements

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) has begun notifying SoonerCare (Medicaid) members who may be affected by new federal work requirements taking effect January 1, 2027. Members who receive a yellow letter from OHCA should read it carefully and follow any instructions to avoid a disruption in their SoonerCare coverage. 

The requirement stems from a new federal law and applies to adults ages 19-64 who are not otherwise exempt. Members will need to complete 80 hours per month or demonstrate a minimum monthly income. Qualifying hours may be earned through employment, community service or work programs, and/or educational programs. Members can use the work requirements screener at Oklahoma.gov/OHCA/WorkRequirements to see if they could meet an exception. 

What the yellow letter means

SoonerCare members who receive a yellow letter may need to take action in 2027 to remain eligible for Medicaid. OHCA will first use information already on file to determine whether a member meets the requirement or qualifies for an exception. If more information is needed, OHCA will send a separate notice explaining what documentation is required to maintain coverage.  

What members should do now

1. Update your information. Confirm your phone number, address and email are current at MySoonerCare.org.
2. Watch your mail and email. Additional letters with instructions may follow the yellow letter if OHCA needs more information.
3. Review available resources. Resources to help members find a job, enroll in school or participate in another qualifying activity are available at the website listed above.

What providers and employers can do

Providers, employers and community partners can help spread the word by using OHCA’s online stakeholder toolkit and outreach materials. Free posters are available to order for use in workplaces, provider offices and community settings at Oklahoma.gov/OHCA/WorkRequirements.
