The Oklahoma Health Care Authority will host their 6th Annual Tribal Consultation meeting at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center, 1899 South Gordon Cooper Dr., Shawnee, Okla., on Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Tribal Consultation is an opportunity for Oklahoma tribal leaders and their designees to receive updates and give input on various issues regarding SoonerCare and Insure Oklahoma’s programs and how they affect the tribal communities.  The intent is to provide opportunities for tribal leaders from across the state to be more engaged and informed on the activities and direction of the state’s SoonerCare (Oklahoma Medicaid) program.

The agenda features some key topics for the tribal community including: what impact does SoonerCare have on the tribal communities; how to provide more open and transparent communication; and an overview and detailed program information on the American Indian SoonerCare population.

The Tribal Consultation also serves as an annual launching point for new ideas and/or programs to be set in motion and to refocus the strategic direction of the agency’s Tribal Relations unit under the direction of Dana Miller who serves as OHCA’s Tribal Relations Director.

In years past, ideas brought to this forum have blossomed into beneficial programs including SoonerCare coverage for the Riverside Indian Boarding School in Anadarko. SoonerCare was the first Medicaid program in the nation to formally provide coverage to American Indian boarding school students.
