High Plains instructor wins SkillUSA award

High Plains Technology Center instructor Pake Carlson has been named SkillsUSA Region 4 Advisor of the Year.

Carlson, a constructor instructor, is also a High Plains Tech alumnus and a volunteer firefighter and EMT. He has been an instructor for 13 years and has served as CareerTech student organization coordinator, district adviser and trade and industrial education cluster president for Oklahoma construction trades.

He has been named the Oklahoma SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year and received a Breaking Traditions Award.

He is one of five people who will compete for the national award later this month at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.

Francis Tuttle students create unique walking cane

A group of Francis Tuttle Technology Center students used a TI-84 calculator to create a walking cane to help blind people get around and received an honorable mention in the TI-84 Codes Contest.

Four Computer Science Academy students – Colten Roberts, Lai Sengvilay, Siddharth Pandit and Luis Blake -- designed the cane to help blind people sense objects in front of them faster than they could with traditional walking canes.

Central High Public Schools begin CTE center construction

Central High Public Schools in Stephens County has begun work on building a new career and technology center.

The new building with have classrooms for agricultural education, family and consumer sciences education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

District voters approved a bond issue for the project in 2024. The district expects the building to be completed in August 2026.

Students learn about aviation at flight camp

Southern Technology Center recently hosted fifth and sixth grade students learning about aviation at the OU Sooner Flight Camp.

The students got a hands-on introduction to the industry; the camp included building rockets, piloting drones and learning the science behind flying.

“Anything we can do to teach some of our younger people more about the aviation industry as a whole and opportunities in aviation, we want to do that,” Southern Tech Marketing Coordinator Brad Bentley told KSWO 7News.
