Skills Center students help repair gas leak
Oklahoma CareerTech Skills Center students at Eddie Warrior Correctional Center recently worked alongside staff members to repair the facility after a gas leak was discovered.
Workers replaced 225 feat of steel gas line and then found additional leaks that necessitated more repairs.
“Everyone, staff and inmates, has shown real dedication, working long hours to make progress each day,” said Tyce Barlow, chief administrator of construction and maintenance in a Department of Corrections release.

Metro Tech unveils nursing simulation lab
Metro Technology Centers has opened a new nursing simulation lab that replicates real-world clinical settings to give health care students cutting-edge training opportunities.
The 9,787 square foot building contains a simulation lab with 10 hospital beds, nursing simulation manikins, stretchers and hospital equipment; two classrooms; a surgical lab with four operating room suites; and a skills lab with 10 hospital beds and nursing simulation manikins.
“This new facility represents a major step forward in our commitment to workforce development in health care,” said Superintendent and CEO Aaron Collins.
The project is a result of funds from an American Rescue Plan Act grant awarded through the Oklahoma Healthcare Workforce Training Commission.

Oklahoma House passes National Guard tuition bill
The Oklahoma House of Representatives has passed a bill to help National Guard members pay for certification or licensure programs at Oklahoma technology centers.
HB1243, authored by Rep. Judd Strom, R-Copan, passed 82-6 and has moved to the Senate for its consideration.
“I can’t imagine a better partnership than this one between the Oklahoma National Guard and Career Tech than one that provides our service men and women with the opportunity to complete a vocational training program while they serve,” Strom said.

Great Plains teacher wins acting award
A video production instructor at Great Plains Technology Center recently won a 2024 BroadwayWorld Oklahoma Award for Best Performer in a Musical.
Dan Tibbs played Dewey Finn in Lawton Community Theatre’s production of “School of Rock.”
Tibbs has taught at Great Plains since 2009.
