Inmates, staff persevere amid Eddie Warrior gas leak

What began as a small gas leak outside Eddie Warrior Correctional Center has grown into a complex repair project – but thanks to dedicated staff and determined inmates, the facility is pushing forward.

Since Feb. 26, CareerTech students – inmates gaining valuable vocational training – have been working tirelessly alongside staff to restore normal operations. Their commitment has been vital as crews continue to uncover new leaks throughout the aging infrastructure.

After initially replacing 225 feet of steel gas line, additional leaks were discovered requiring further repairs.

"We came out as soon as we were made aware of the leak," said Tyce Barlow, chief administrator of Construction and Maintenance. “Everyone, staff and inmates, has shown real dedication, working long hours to make progress each day.”

The leaks – all located outside the facility – pose no explosion risk, but they have disrupted heating and kitchen operations. Despite the challenges, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections has taken steps to ensure inmates still have access to essential comforts.

A 500-gallon propane tank was installed to provide hot water for showers, and staff members are using charcoal grills to prepare some hot meals. The women housed at EWCC have played a key role in maintaining calm and supporting each other during this period.

“They’re really doing their best to keep us comfortable because they know it’s hard, especially with 950 ladies on this yard,” said inmate Kylie Friend. “It could be much worse. They’ve fired up the grills so we can have at least one hot meal a day.”

The situation is a testament to the teamwork and perseverance that can emerge in difficult times.

“We are doing everything we can,” Barlow said. “I think we’re on the downhill side.”
