CareerTech apprenticeships in the news
News 9 recently followed a Canadian Valley Technology Center student completing an apprenticeship at Oklahoma Eye Surgeons.
Carlee Walls is studying in CV Tech’s vision care program while working as an apprentice. When students in the program complete their apprenticeships, they take a test to become a certified opthalmic assistants.
Oklahoma CareerTech has taken the lead on apprenticeships in Oklahoma and has received a $562,459 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to build apprenticeship capacity and expand Labor Department registered apprenticeships in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma student featured for national FCCLA role
Brandon Weibel, a Silo High School senior, recently talked to News 9 about his journey to becoming the national president of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.
Weibel was elected national president during the 2024 FCCLA National Leadership Conference. He previously served as Oklahoma FCCLA president and state vice president of development.
He told the Oklahoma City news station about FCCLA, what it does and how it prepares students for life. He also talked about his experiences traveling the country as national president and the support he receives in his hometown.
FCCLA is one of seven CareerTech student organizations. It is affiliated with family and consumer sciences education.

CareerTech helps develop barbershop at prison
Oklahoma CareerTech played a role in developing an in-house barbershop at an Oklahoma prison.
Inmates at the JH Lilley Correctional Center in Boley staff the barbershop, which was featured on Oklahoma News Report.
The news program reported that CareerTech played a big role in creating the barbershop. CareerTech operates the Boley Skills Center at the correctional center. The Skills Centers School System provides CareerTech education to inmates under the supervision of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and juveniles under the supervision of the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs.

CareerTech employee named Leader Under 40
Katlyn Hudgins, a career development coordinator at Oklahoma CareerTech, was named one of 10 Leaders Under 40 by the Young Professionals of Stillwater.
Leaders Under 40 celebrates the accomplishments of those who are making a difference in Stillwater. Nominees are scored on professional and philanthropic involvement in the community.
Hudgins is a career development coordinator for special populations in CareerTech’s Counseling and Career Development division. She helps personnel at K-12 schools, technology centers and Skills Centers meet local guidelines and state and federal legislation; helps develop or adapt products targeted toward services to members of special populations; and provides professional development and technical assistance to ensure partnerships and programs are appropriate and accessible to individuals in special population.
