CareerTech working with higher ed, SDE on graduation rate issue

Oklahoma State Department of Education and the state Legislature to address a federal order concerning graduation rates.

Oklahoma Voice reported that the U.S. Department of Education has ordered Oklahoma to no longer count students who complete the alternate CORE curriculum among graduation numbers. The curriculum allows students to replace a math and science credit with a CareerTech course.

CareerTech State Director Brent Haken told Oklahoma Voice that the order does not accurately reflect what Oklahoma law allows.

“The statutes in place currently allow any student that wants to, whether traditional or non-traditional, to enter a college or university if they meet admissions requirements. And those admissions requirements can vary,” he said.

Poteau principal promotes CTE to students

More than 100 Poteau High School students attend Kiamichi Technology Centers every year, and Principal Joe Ballard would send more if he could, he told District Administration, which offers print and digital media for K-12 school districts.

“You don’t have to go to college to make a good living,” Ballard said.

Recent state legislation makes it possible for more students to take courses at technology centers, said Michael Culwell, KTC Spiro and Poteau campus director.
