CareerTech student organizations celebrate virtually
Five Oklahoma CareerTech student organizations have turned their 2020 state conferences into virtual events.
The 2020 OK HOSA State Leadership Conference Celebration on April 22 included announcements of adviser and administrator awards, honorary members, scholarship winners, Breaking Traditions winners, competitive event and recognition winners and the amount of money raised for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Keynote speaker Patrick Grady also participated. See more on YouTube. HOSA is affiliated with health careers education.
Oklahoma FCCLA will share its FCCLA Showcase at 9 a.m. April 30 online. See it here. FCCLA is affiliated with family and consumer sciences education.
The Oklahoma Technology Student Association will have its virtual award recognition May 1 on its YouTube page. TSA is affiliated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Oklahoma FFA will have a virtual event May 12. Leaders are still working out details, but you can find the Oklahoma FFA YouTube channel here. FFA is affiliated with agricultural education.
Autry graphic arts student making a difference
Two Autry Technology Center graphic arts students are using their skills to help people in their community.
When gatherings of more than 10 people were prohibited during the Covid-19 pandemic, second-year student Kieran Niles, an Enid High School senior, decided he would use the video editing skills he had been polishing in his graphic arts training program to help his church. Since quarantine, Kieran has stayed busy both capturing and editing video for broadcast of Oakwood Christian Church services.

Kieran said that it is keeping him busy but it is definitely both rewarding and enjoyable.
Another second-year student and Enid High senior, Jessica Ruckel, is using the leadership and service skills she developed as president of Autry’s SkillsUSA chapter. She led many successful community service projects throughout the school year and is now leading Girl Scouts to help the helpers in her community. As a Senior Girl Scout and leader of the Cadets for Troop 3126, she led her troop to donate more than 1,400 boxes of Girl Scout cookies left over from their 2020 cookie season. She delivered donations to St. Mary's Hospital staff, Integris Bass Baptist Hospital staff, Enid Police Department, Enid Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, The Commons Nursing Home staff, Jumbo Whole Foods staff and some of the support staff of Enid Public Schools.
“We are so proud to be able to support our community in this small way,” she said.
“Jessica and Kieran are both exceptional student leaders, and I am not surprised to see them continue to give back to our community during such an unprecedented time. I am proud of both of them,” said Cheryl Cooksey, Autry graphic arts instructor.
Congratulations to Larry Bullock
Congratulations to Oklahoma CareerTech retiree Larry Bullock for being awarded the SkillsUSA Marsha Daves Lifetime Achievement Award. Larry is very deserving of this honor. His dedication to career and technology education has changed lives for educators and students across the organization.
FCCLA officers provide help to the community
Eufaula FCCLA officers decided to work apart together by filling care bags and collecting blankets for local senior living center residents.
“I’m so proud of these officers,” said Kimberly Folsom, Eufaula High School family and consumer sciences teacher. “Although they’ve been through their own trials during this pandemic, they wanted to make a difference in the community by putting others first. We understand visitors haven’t been allowed in the manors for safety reasons, so we’re hoping the gifts will bring joy.”
FCS teacher helps deliver meals to students

Altus High School family and consumer sciences teacher Sue Malena has been helping deliver meals to students. The school district has five bus routes and several car routes covering Altus and the surrounding area, she said, and she has been helping on a bus route that has turned out to be the biggest route.
“We provide breakfast, lunch and milk for each meal. Most days each meal includes a hot item,” she said. “A typical day for our route is 380 kids (760 meals) but we have served as many as 461 kids in one day. Recently our district provided over 16,000 meals in one week.
Tech centers give to communities
Mid-Del Tech recently donated face masks, gloves, isolation gowns and sanitizing supplies to medical workers. The tech center also loaned two hospital beds and personal protective equipment to Alliance Health in Midwest City.
Pioneer Tech in Ponca City donation PPE, masks, sanitizers, gloves and more from health career programs to Blackwell Regional Hospital and to Alliance Health in Ponca City.
Green Country Tech in Okmulgee donated masks and gloves to the Okmulgee County Emergency Medical Services.
