Western Tech superintendent retiring

Western Technology Center Superintendent Kathe Corning recently announced that she will retire effective June 30.

Corning served at Western Tech for 48 years, starting as a fashion trades teacher in 1978. She served in various other capacities before becoming superintendent in 2020.

During her time at WTC, the tech center transformed the Clinton Sherman Air Force Base in Burns Flat into a 17-building campus; developed a student assessment/certification plan; implemented a crisis response team to serve sending schools; created a student attendance protocol; development longitudinal program data charts; designed a cost spreadsheet for programs to monitor expenditures; and added full-time programs in HVAC, electrical trades and aviation structures technology.

Jay Edelen will succeed her as superintendent on July 1.

Francis Tuttle students restore Wellston fire engine

Wellston Fire Department recently unveiled a historic engine restored by students at Francis Tuttle Technology Center.

The fire department acquired the truck in about 1948 and kept it in active service until the 1980s or early 1990s. It eventually was parked at the town’s water plant, where it deteriorated before being moved back to the fire station for indoor storage, according to a Fox 25 story.

When the department decided to restore it, the fire chief met with Francis Tuttle’s Rockwell Campus auto collision repair instructor, who wanted to give students a hands-on project.

Chisholm Trail students create Centennial Wall directory

Students at Chisholm Trail Technology Center created a searchable database for a Centennial Wall outside the Kingfisher County Courthouse.

The database allows visitors to find names of family members who are listed on the wall.

Students entered almost 2,000 names of individuals and businesses into the database, organized it by position on the wall and sorted alphabetically by last name. They also created a map key to help individuals find family members.

The team included Brooke Barton, Kingfisher High School graduate, and Miranda Borelli, Dover High School junior, who work in advanced spreadsheets, and Serenity Lasiter, Watonga High School senior, who works in graphic design, along with CTTC multimedia and business instructor Sarah Edsall.
