Miriam McFarland’s journey to a career in respiratory therapy
Miriam McFarland’s passion for health care has been a guiding force throughout her life. Though she always knew she wanted to work in the medical field, it wasn’t until she discovered respiratory therapy — through CareerTech — that she found her true calling.
McFarland explored several roles in health care after graduating from high school in 2007, working as a hospital housekeeper, porter and nurse tech. Those early experiences opened her eyes to the many opportunities available in the medical field, but it was a respiratory therapist co-worker who made the biggest impact.
“My absolute favorite co-worker was a respiratory therapist,” McFarland said. “She took me under her wing, encouraged me and always told me I could do anything I put my mind to. After watching her, I finally said, ‘I think I could do that,’ and I never looked back.”
Inspired by that mentorship, McFarland enrolled in the respiratory care program at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, offered in partnership with Oklahoma City Community College. Through this program, she earned an associate in applied science in respiratory care. The combination of hands-on training, classroom instruction and clinical experience prepared her to pass her medical boards and become a registered respiratory therapist.
“The in-class lectures, hands-on lab time and clinical rounding gave us the knowledge to be successful,” she said. “We learned the necessities of the job, how to speak up and to never stop learning.”
McFarland credits her instructors and classmates at Francis Tuttle for creating a supportive, family-like environment that helped her thrive. The program not only gave her technical skills but also strengthened her confidence and ability to advocate for her patients.
Today, McFarland works as a respiratory therapist at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital, where she says she values the relationships she builds with patients, families and medical teams. She takes pride in knowing her work makes a tangible difference in people’s lives.
“Caring for my patients and helping them breathe easier is incredibly rewarding,” she said. “When you care for someone over a longer period, they grow to trust you and your input; that’s a great feeling.”
Beyond her career, McFarland says CareerTech helped her gain the skills and stability needed to support her family and advocate for their needs. She encourages others to explore CareerTech as an option, especially if they’re looking for a focused, individualized learning environment.
“Get involved, build great relationships and take in everything they’re willing to teach you,” she said. “The hands-on experience you gain in class will transfer to your future career and put you ahead of the curve in many situations.”
Her journey is a testament to the power of education, mentorship and perseverance — just one example of how finding the right path can lead to a fulfilling career.
