Technology Center Instructor Certification Options

Industry Specialist Certification Path

This certification path does not require the technology center instructor to work toward a degree. This certificate type can only be used to teach in a technology center and cannot be used to teach any academic areas. There are limitations to adding other areas of certification. The final requirement for this certificate type is to complete at least 225 hours of approved, specialized professional development. These professional development hours will be approved through an individualized PD plan. Instructors will have a 3-year time frame to complete the professional development plan. Once an instructor completes their requirements a 5-year Industry Specialist certificate will be awarded.

Technology Center Certification Path – Associate’s Degree

With an associate’s degree, a full-time instructor can qualify for the CareerTech Standard teaching certificate. This certificate type can only be used to teach in a technology center and cannot be used to teach any academic areas. There are limitations to adding other areas of certification. The associate’s degree must be completed through a regionally accredited college or university. The final requirement, once the degree is completed, is either 15 credit hours of education courses or 225 hours of professional development. Once an instructor completes their degree and the final requirements, a 5-year CareerTech Standard certificate will be awarded.

Technology Center Certification Path – Bachelor’s Degree

With a bachelor’s degree, a full-time instructor can qualify for the Standard teaching certificate. This certificate type is not limited to technology centers and additional areas of certification may be added via testing. The bachelor’s degree must be completed through a regionally accredited college or university. The final requirement, once the degree is completed, is either 15 credit hours of education courses or 225 hours of professional development. Once an instructor completes their degree and the final requirements, a 5-year Standard certificate will be awarded.

Provisional Certification

With each of the above plans, the technology center instructor will be on a provisional certification until the requirements to move to the permanent certificate are met. To qualify for the provisional certification, the instructor must have at least 4,000 hours of industry related experience in the subject matter they are instructing. They must also hold the industry recognized credential or required subject area exam that is approved by ODCTE for the subject matter they are instructing.
