Why CTSOs are important to Oklahoma
CareerTech State Director Marcie Mack discusses the importance of CareerTech student organizations in a recent column in The Journal Record.
In CTSOs, students learn technical skills they will use on the job; they also learn other skills necessary for career success, skills in communication, teamwork, time management and critical thinking.
The seven co-curricular CTSOs offer students contextual instruction, leadership and personal development, applied learning and real-world application.

Six slated for induction into Oklahoma CareerTech Hall of Fame
The Oklahoma CareerTech Foundation will induct six people into the Oklahoma Career and Technology Education Hall of Fame in October.
This year’s inductees are Kent Boggs, Carolyn Cotton, Nancy Randolph Davis, Bob Funk, Phil Waul and Greg Winters.
“These Oklahoma CareerTech Hall of Fame honorees have contributed significantly to the success of the CareerTech System,” said Marcie Mack, CareerTech state director. “Each recipient has advanced the mission of CareerTech in unique and extraordinary ways. We appreciate and honor their commitment to students, businesses and the lives of Oklahomans.”

Southern Tech names new superintendent
Southern Technology Center Deputy Superintendent Eric Ward will become the tech center’s fourth superintendent on July 1.
The tech center’s board recently appointed Ward to the position after Superintendent David Powell submitted his resignation effective June 30. Stephanie Bills, associate superintendent of instruction at Metro Technology Centers, will become assistant superintendent at Southern Tech.

EOC Tech instructor talks about Oklahoma film industry
Eastern Oklahoma County Technology Center instructor Ben Hlavaty recently talked to News 9 in Oklahoma City about Oklahoma’s film industry and CareerTech’s training programs for industry workers.
Hlavaty teaches digital media at EOC Tech and said the growth of the film industry in Oklahoma is exciting because more students can find jobs locally.
Oklahoma CareerTech and the Film Education Institute of Oklahoma signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year to work together and with other industry partners to provide training and curriculum to meet the film industry’s employment demands in the state.
Sheriff swears in Tulsa Tech students as detention officers
The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office recently swore in more than a dozen students from Tulsa Technology Center as detention officers.
Tulsa’s NewsChannel 8 reported that the tech center’s criminal justice program is part of a collaboration with the sheriff’s office to ensure that detention officers have the required training.

Mid-Del students tour warehouse
Mid-Del Technology Center plumbing program students recently had the opportunity to tour Locke Supply’s warehouse.
The company also provided tools and other supplies for the students.
Purple Ducks place second in national space challenge
Francis Tuttle Technology Center’s Purple Ducks beat out 209 teams from across the country at the national StellarXplorers VII High School Space Challenge.
StellarXplorers is an Air Force Association program designed to inspire students to pursue education and careers in STEM fields that use space system engineering.
During the competition, teams defined orbits and spacecraft components and launched vehicles to meet a set of mission requirements. The students had to choose where to launch from, what equipment/sensors to choose for the payload while staying within the weight and cost constraints, and what orbit to select for the satellite to optimize its objective. The scenario used actual real-life situations, numbers, and constraints. Teams also gave a presentation to a panel of experts.
