UPDATE: Dispensary Guidance on Alternative Patient ID

Tuesday, January 06, 2026

To improve patient experience and ensure timely access to medical marijuana, OMMA is providing updated guidance regarding acceptable forms of identification at the point of sale.

Effective immediately, dispensaries are authorized to accept an official OMMA approval email or approval in the OMMA MedPortal in lieu of a physical card, provided it is accompanied by a valid photo ID. This allows patients to utilize their license as soon as they are approved in our system.

Accepted Documentation for Verification

To verify a patient’s status, please accept the following:

  1. An official OMMA approval email or proof of approved status in the OMMA MedPortal (or a photo of a physical OMMA patient card)
  2. AND a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport)

Mandatory Verification Process

To maintain compliance and program integrity, dispensaries must:

  1. Verify the patient's identity using their photo ID.
  2. Use OMMA Verify to confirm that the patient’s license is in Active status.

We appreciate your flexibility and cooperation as we move in this patient-forward direction. For questions regarding this guidance, please contact us.
