REMINDER: Physician Medical Marijuana Recommendation Requirements Now in Effect
As of Jan. 1, 2026, state law (SB 1066) requires all physicians to complete medical marijuana education and register with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) before providing medical marijuana recommendations to OMMA patients and applicants.
Recommendations issued on or before Dec. 31, 2025, are still considered valid for the full 30-day window. Any recommendation dated Jan. 1, 2026, or later must come from an approved, registered physician.
Reminders for Patients
To prevent a rejection of your application, please avoid seeking recommendations from physicians who are not registered with OMMA.
- Registration is mandatory: Physicians who are not registered with OMMA can no longer legally recommend medical marijuana.
- Verify your physician: OMMA maintains a voluntary Registered Physicians List on our Physicians webpage. If your physician does not appear on this list, you must confirm their OMMA registration status directly with them before obtaining a recommendation.
Reminders for Licensed Businesses
To ensure a smooth licensing process, remind patients that their physician must have received approval from OMMA before their appointment. Directing a patient to an unqualified or pendingprovider jeopardizes their ability to obtain a license.
- Verify registration: Encourage patients to check the Registered Physicians List on our Physicians webpage. If a doctor is not on that list, patients must confirm registration directly with the physician, as some providers choose to remain registered but unlisted.
- Physical location: It is illegal for a recommending physician to be located at the same physical address as a dispensary (including virtual appointments conducted within your facility).
Reminders for Physicians
To provide medical marijuana recommendations, you must meet and maintain the following standards:
- Approval is mandatory: Please note that you are not considered registered until you receive official approval from OMMA. A submitted application does not equal registration; you must wait for confirmation before signing new recommendations.
- Active OMMA registration: You must be registered with OMMA and have submitted proof of the required medical marijuana education.
- Professional standing: You must remain in good standing with your respective State Board (Medical Licensure, Osteopathic or Podiatric).
- Location restrictions: You may not be located at the same physical address as a dispensary. This includes conducting virtual appointments for patients who are physically present at a dispensary.
