(Oklahoma City) – “Early voting” – officially known as in-person absentee voting – begins at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday for the August 27 elections in 53 counties across the state.
Early voting will be held Thursday, August 22 and Friday, August 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in all 53 counties that have elections.
Voters who reside in the 32 counties with state or county Runoff Primary elections, will ALSO have early voting available on Saturday, August 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Not every voter in every precinct will have an election. Twenty-four (24) counties have no elections at all.
A list of early voting locations is available on the State Election Board website, along with a list of elections by county. Voters must vote in the county where they are registered to vote.
CLOSED RUNOFF PRIMARIES
Voters are reminded that Oklahoma has modified, closed primaries.
In order to participate in a party’s Runoff Primary election, you must be a registered voter of that party. However, the Democratic Party has chosen to open its primaries to Independent voters this year, while the Republican and Libertarian parties have chosen to keep their primaries closed. Independent voters who wish to participate in the Democratic Runoff Primary, must request a Democratic Runoff Primary ballot from election workers. Independent voters may not vote a Republican Runoff Primary ballot or Libertarian Runoff Primary ballot.
Under Oklahoma law, a Runoff Primary election is held if no candidate receives a majority of the votes in a Primary election.
NONPARTISAN ELECTIONS
Some voters may have nonpartisan local elections on the ballot. All voters, regardless of party affiliation, may participate in nonpartisan elections.
BEFORE HEADING OUT TO VOTE
Many voters do not have an election on August 27. Before going to the polling place, voters are encouraged to check the OK Voter Portal or the election list for elections in their county and precinct. (Voters who have an election will be able to download a sample ballot for their precinct using the OK Voter Portal.)
Voters with questions may also contact their County Election Board or the State Election Board for more information.
