Asbestos

The Asbestos National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) requires that renovation and/or demolition notices be submitted to the Air Quality Division (AQD) when certain project conditions exist. We hope the information provided below will assist you in determining when a notice is required and when it is not. Questions? Call the Air Quality Division at (405) 702-4100.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a heat-resistant mineral fiber once widely used in building construction materials for insulation, as a fire retardant, and for many other purposes. Asbestos can harm people when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, releasing tiny fibers into the air. When people breathe in the fibers, they can develop diseases like asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
