Water Quality
The Air Quality Division monitors ambient air pollution, maintains emissions inventories, forecasts conditions, and develops state air quality rules under state and federal clean air laws.
Our local environmental specialists respond to all citizen complaints regarding environmental pollution. ECLS also plays a significant role in disaster response and recovery for the State’s water, sanitation, and waste disposal efforts.
The Executive Offices provide leadership and oversight—handling executive direction, legal affairs, process improvement, communications and public reporting.
Land Protection inspects and permits hazardous waste and solid waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities, permits and inspects certain underground injection wells, manages radioactive materials, restores contaminated land to safe and useful conditions.
SELS provides chemical, bacteriological, and radiological analysis of a wide array of sample types including water, sediments, soil, wastes, and more.
The Water Quality Division regulates public drinking water and wastewater systems, certifies operators, and upholds statewide surface‑water quality standards for lakes, rivers, and streams.

The Air Quality division operates a dual permitting system — construction permits and operating permits — to control major and minor sources of air pollution.
The Environmental Complaints and Local Services (ECLS) Division brings DEQ programs to the local level across the state.
DEQ operates the Laboratory Accreditation Program (LAP) to ensure the quality of analytical data received by the DEQ Water Quality Division and other state agencies for compliance and decision-making purposes.
The Land Protection Division has diverse duties. It inspects and permits hazardous waste and solid waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities.
