Around 8 months of age, your baby will be able to grasp and hold onto things. At this time, they are ready to join the family at the table. Let them eat when you eat. They learn by watching you.

Offer the following foods:

Offer soft foods you can mash between your fingers. These foods should be cut into strips or wedges so baby can easily hold and gnaw them.

  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Cooked fish or chicken
  • Tofu
  • Toast strips
  • Cooked pasta noodles
  • Avocado slices
  • Cooked apple slices (without skin)
  • Banana slices
  • Cooked sweet potato stick

Kids are sensory learners and want to explore! They learn about food by touching, smelling and tasting it. While this process is important, it can get a little messy. Here are some tips to help you manage the mess:

  • Strip baby down to diaper and use a good quality bib.
  • Choose a highchair that is easy to wipe down.
  • Place the chair on tile, hard wood or an easy to clean surface or put a large piece of plastic or a tablecloth under the chair.
  • Don’t use a plate. Place food directly on the highchair tray or table to prevent dishes being thrown on the floor.
