Infectious Disease Prevention and Response

Infectious Disease Prevention and Response is composed of the following programs:

• Communicable Disease Investigation and Surveillance
• Emerging Infectious Diseases
• Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antibiotic Resistance Prevention

Together these programs work to prevent and control communicable disease in Oklahoma through the following activities:

• Surveillance and investigation of infectious diseases
• Investigation of disease outbreaks
• Response to emerging diseases
• Analyzing data to plan, implement and evaluate disease prevention and control measures
• Disease surveillance reporting to the public
• Education of healthcare professionals, public health partners, and the public
• Supporting healthcare facilities with infection prevention and control guidance and education
• Bioterrorism preparedness

Epidemiologists within the Infectious Disease Prevention and Response respond statewide to conduct epidemiologic investigations of unusual disease clusters and outbreaks of infectious diseases. The purpose of outbreak investigation is to identify the agent causing the illness, determine the source and how the infectious disease was transmitted, and to implement control measures to prevent additional diseases, thereby protecting the public. The Infectious Disease Prevention and Response conducts these investigations in partnership with county health department personnel and local health care providers, and at times in cooperation with other OSDH Services and State and Federal agencies.

The Infectious Disease Prevention and Response Service Epidemiologist-on-call is available 24 hours/7 days a week at (405) 426-8710 for communicable disease consultations and reporting of diseases or suspected outbreaks.
