Start Weaning from the Bottle

It is time to start teaching your child how to drink from a cup. Begin offering small amounts of breastmilk, formula or water in a cup. Remember the following:

  • Breastfeeding babies will still nurse 4-6 times/day.
  • Formula-fed babies will still drink 24-32 ounces each day.
  • Offer formula in a cup more often than in the bottle.
  • Only put water, breastmilk or formula in the cup. No cows’ milk before your child is 12-months-old.
