SoonerStart/ Early Intervention

The SoonerStart program, works with families in Pittsburg County to help them prepare their infants and toddlers for a more successful school experience. This program is designed to help parents and caregivers with infants and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays. 

SoonerStart is a joint effort of the Oklahoma Department of Education, Health, Human Services, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, the Commission on Children and Youth, and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority.

Services are provided for eligible children (newborn-3 years of age) and their families.  

Who is Eligible

Children through 36 months of age are determined eligible with an automatically qualifying condition or syndrome (for example: Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, etc.) or through developmental testing

Developmental testing is available for the following areas

  • Personal/Social
  • Self-Help
  • Gross/Fine motor
  • Receptive/ Expressive Language
  • Cognition
  • Hearing
  • Vision

Intervention services may include:

  • Parent education
  • Speech/Language therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Audiology
  • Vision Consultant
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consultant
  • Resource coordinator services

Cost

Services are offered at no charge to families regardless of insurance or income. The program is mandated by federal and state law and is funded through various state and federal sources.

Appointments can be arranged to meet the needs of the family and can be provided in a safe and natural environment for the child, such as home or day care, but families are also welcome to come to the county health department as needed.
