HIV/STD
Sexually transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections that can be passed from one person to another during sexual contact. They can be caused by a number of different organisms such as: bacteria, viruses, protozoa and parasites. Common STDs include, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Human papillomavirus (HPV), and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Many sexually transmitted diseases do not have symptoms. As a result they can be transmitted unknowingly to others. They can however cause physical and psychological discomfort as well as result in complications such as infertility, premature births, blindness and even death. If symptoms occur, some common symptoms include:
- Sores, bumps or blisters near the genitals or mouth
- Burning or pain when urinating
- Discharge from the penis, vagina or rectum
If you have symptoms of an STD or suspect you may have been exposed to an STD, the Payne County Health Department can test for the following: HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Syphilis.
