WIC
Purpose
The goal of WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program is to give our children the best possible start in life. This is done by providing nutrition education, breast feeding support, healthy foods, and health care referrals during the critical stages of fetal and childhood development. It is a nutrition education and supplemental food program for pregnant, breast-feeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children up to five years of age.

Outreach
The Custer County Health Department will be pleased to provide an outreach speaker to share information, discuss eligibility issues, and answer questions regarding the WIC program. Please call the below numbers for more information.
Who is eligible for WIC?
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have recently given birth
- Infants
- Children up to the age of five
Will I qualify for WIC benefits?
You might qualify if you:
- Live in the state of Oklahoma
- Have a family income within program limits
- Are determined to be at nutritional risk
- Receive Medicaid, SNAP or TANF - you are automatically income eligible for WIC benefits.

Call the CCHD WIC Clinic at the below numbers to schedule an appointment to visit the clinic. Walk-ins are welcome if staff is available.
The person receiving the benefits will need to attend the appointment. You will need to bring proof of identification, income and address.
Services Provided
During your appointment:
- Your WIC professional will ask for a brief health and eating history
- You will receive a weight and height check along with a finger blood test for anemia
- You will learn how WIC foods will help you and your child
- If you are eligible, you will receive your WIC food instruments on the day of your appointment and can go directly to the grocery store
- Other follow-up appointments will be made for nutrition education and brief health assessments

- Milk
- Lactose-reduced milk
- Soy Milk
- Juice
- Cheese
- Cereal
- Beans
- Peanut butter
- Eggs
- Formula
- Fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables
- Whole grain breads, brown rice and corn or whole wheat tortillas
- Tofu

WIC Nutrition/Health Assessment
The WIC Nutrition/Health Assessment forms for pregnant women, postpartum women, infants, and children are part of a complete nutrition assessment and capture medical history information necessary for determining WIC eligibility.
Notice of Proxy
The Notice of Proxy provides a mechanism to enable WIC participants to be represented by another person to continue program benefits when they are unable to come to the clinic during regular hours.
Exception Request for Formula/Food
WIC provides supplemental infant formula. A WIC formula contract is required by the USDA and infants on standard milk-based or soy-based formula must be issued a contract formula. Oklahoma WIC currently has a contract with Gerber Good Start brand infant formulas. If your infant or child requires a medical formula, his or her healthcare provider may request that WIC make an exception by completing an Exception Request for Formula/Food. Formula exceptions are not guaranteed. Each one is considered on an individual basis and approval is dependent on funding. Formulas may not be issued solely for the purpose of enhancing nutrient intake or managing body weight and are not authorized for a non-specific formula or food intolerance.

Important Information
Custer County Health Department does offer nutrition classes each month by appointment. Please call the below numbers to schedule your appointment. All you need to create an account is your demographics ID from your WIC Clinic.
WIC contracts with certain formula companies to use their products. Other formulas may be provided for infants with documented special needs.
Breast Feeding Information and Support
The Oklahoma State Department of Health views breastfeeding as the normal way of feeding babies. Breastfeeding helps babies get the best start in life. It helps children reach their full potential for health and growth. Mothers everywhere have found that breastfeeding can work. CCHD offers a Peer Counseling Program that can help breastfeeding moms be successful.

- Promotes breastfeeding and helps you make an informed decision about feeding your baby.
- Contacts you to build confidence and support your breastfeeding goals.
- Responds to breastfeeding questions or concerns you might have.
- Refers you to WIC breastfeeding experts for more help.
HOW CAN A PEER COUNSELOR HELP YOU? Your WIC peer counselor can give you:
- Ways to get a good start with breastfeeding.
- Tips for making plenty of breast milk for your baby.
- Help with breastfeeding concerns.
- Ideas for getting support from your family and friends.
- Ways you can stay close to your baby through breastfeeding after you return to work or school.
- Tips for how to breastfeed comfortably and discreetly, even in public.
Breast Pumps
For those WIC clients who wish to breast feed, breast pumps will be issued if available and you meet requirements.
