Frequently Asked Questions
General
This app will read Digital IDs to confirm their authenticity and display only necessary information to complete certain business transactions like age verification.
To download the app, your device must meet the following requirements:
- For Apple users, you must have an iPhone capable of running iOS 17.6 or newer.
- For Android users, you must have a device capable of running Android 12 (API level 31) or newer.
If you would like to use the Tap option to verify credentials, you will need a device with NFC capabilities. If your device does not have NFC capabilities, you will need to use the QR option to verify credentials.
Not all Digital IDs, such as IDs in Apple Wallet, allow a QR code for Digital ID presentment. When this happens, Tap is the only method that can be used to receive Digital ID information.
If you wish for your business to accept the Oklahoma Digital ID, please follow the steps below to get started:
- Go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Find and download the Oklahoma Reader app.
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions.
- Contact Service Oklahoma (partnerships@service.ok.gov) to have your business registered as a participating location on their website.
There is nothing additional needed or required to download to begin using this app for your business needs. Once the app has been downloaded and set up, you and your staff can begin verifying Digital IDs immediately.
Keeping customer information private and secure is extremely important. The Oklahoma Reader app will not store any information nor will your device. The app will not allow screenshots or screen recordings to be taken. There is also a timer built in on the verification screen that will prevent a customer’s photo from staying on the screen for more than 15 seconds.
Yes! The verification is conducted directly between your phone and the customer's phone over Bluetooth or NFC, so no Wi-Fi or cell connection is needed.
Reader Verification
The Oklahoma Reader app will have 3 different readers that will provide a photo and age confirmation of the customer without displaying their actual age or other sensitive information.
To begin, launch the Oklahoma Reader app on your device. Next, choose the type of verification you need and decide how to receive the Digital ID information from the customer. Both devices will interact based on the method chosen and the customer will confirm on their device if they want to share the requested information. Once they confirm, the verified details will appear on your screen.
Reader Types
- Over 18 – This will provide the customer’s photo and confirm if the customer is 18 and over.
- Over 18 / Under 21 – This will provide the customer’s photo and confirm if the customer is 18 and over, but under 21.
- Over 21 – This will provide the customer’s photo and confirm if the customer is 21 and over.
Ways to Receive
- Scan: Will open the device camera to scan the QR code displayed on the customer’s device. Not all Digital IDs will have this option for presentment.
- Tap: Will require the devices to be brought together to receive the customer’s Digital ID. Apple Wallet Digital IDs will require this method.
No, which is what makes the Digital ID safe and secure. The only way to accept a Digital ID is with a certified, ISO-complaint reader, like Oklahoma Reader, that requires the customer to present their Digital ID with their biometric scan.
No, this is never needed or required. The customer will need to retain control of their device to present their Digital ID, since it will require their consent and biometric scan to send the requested information to the reader.
We currently offer Over 18, Over 18 / Under 21, and Over 21 reader options. We are always looking for additional use cases, so please email partnerships@service.ok.gov with more information on future reader options you would like to see available.
For convenience, the last reader option that was used will still be selected when opening the app or reverting to the main menu after a scan. You may change your age reader selection at any time.
If you need to choose a different age reader than the one you selected and are in the middle of request, tap Cancel, Close or Scan Next. You will return to the main reader selection screen to select the correct age reader and begin again.
Digital IDs are an optional digital companion that is never required to provision, and customers are in control of how and when they use it. Customers should always carry their physical credential on them.
In the event they do not have or want to use their Digital ID, please request their physical credential.
Verification Results
Each reader is designed to ask for the photo and whether someone is above or under a specific age.
A customer’s identity will always need to be confirmed from the photo on the results of the person standing in front of you. Colors have been added to make it easier to distinguish if they meet the age criteria of the reader. However, these colors do not indicate anything other than if they meet or do not meet the age criteria.
Green
When a result is highlighted green with a checkmark, it means that the customer meets the criteria of that reader.
Red
When a result is highlighted red with an X, it means that the customer does not meet the criteria of that reader.
Yellow
When a result is highlighted yellow with a caution sign, it means that the customer only meets one of the criteria of that reader.
If you’re unsure that the photo on the screen matches the person in front of you, follow your current policy when identity can’t be confirmed.
This could happen if the customer doesn’t approve the request or the connection was interrupted during the verification.
If the customer doesn’t approve the request:
- Let the customer know they must review the information on their screen and if they approve, complete the biometric scan to send the information. When they are ready, select Scan Next and try to verification again.
- If the customer doesn’t want to provide the information or there are still issues, request the customer to present their physical credential.
If the customer was interrupted:
- When using Tap, ensure that both your device and the customer’s device have Bluetooth turned on.
- For certain devices that allow NFC to be enabled or disabled, ensure that NFC is enabled.
- Select Scan Next to try the verification again, and ensure both devices stay near each other until the verification is complete.
- If the verification still isn’t successful, request the customer to present their physical credential.
For several reasons, this can happen if the reader isn’t able to read the information on the Digital ID. You can always attempt the verification again and if still unsuccessful, request the customer to present their physical credential.
This can happen if the person chooses not to share their age. You can let the customer know this information is needed to provide access to age-restricted items to allow them to decision to share this information.
You can then try the scan again or ask them to present their physical credential to prove identity and age. Follow the standard procedures in place when age and identity can’t be confirmed.
Troubleshooting
Sometimes a scan doesn't work on the first try or you may see an “Unable to share” message on your screen. Here's what to check:
- Ensure both Bluetooth and camera permissions are turned on for your device. Ask the customer to confirm if their Bluetooth is enabled, too.
- Ensure your app is on the most recent version. Open your device’s App Store to confirm there are no pending updates.
- Ensure the customer understands they must complete the biometric scan to send the reader the requested information.
Once all the above has been checked and confirmed, tap Try Again to restart the scan. When using Tap, ensure that both devices stay near one another until the verification is complete. If you’re still unable to scan the Digital ID, please request the customer to present their physical credential.
Not all Digital IDs, such as IDs in Apple Wallet, allow a QR code for Digital ID presentment. When this happens, Tap is the only method that can be used to receive Digital ID information.
Choose Tap prior to beginning the check or if you’re in the middle of a check, select Cancel, select Tap and try the scan again.
If your device does not have NFC hardware, request that the customer present their physical credential.
The customer must review the information being requested and confirm with their biometric scan before the information can be sent to the reader. If this isn’t completed in time, the app moves to a “No response” screen.
Let the customer know they must review the information on their screen and if they approve, complete the biometric scan to send the information. When they are ready, select Scan Next and try to verification again.
If the customer doesn’t want to provide the information or there are still issues, request the customer to present their physical credential.
App Permissions
The Oklahoma Reader app accepts Digital ID presentment through QR codes and NFC taps. Camera access is required to scan QR codes and Bluetooth is required for the Tap method.
In addition to not storing information in the app or on the device, the Oklahoma Reader app is specifically designed to not allow for screenshots or screen recordings. There is also a timer on the results screen that will revert to the reader selection screen after 15 seconds to provide an additional level of security.
This could happen if the customer doesn’t approve the request or the connection was interrupted during the verification.
