New CDL Testing Enhancements Improve Efficiency and Readiness for Oklahoma’s Commercial Drivers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 27, 2025

OKLAHOMA CITY – Service Oklahoma has launched CDL Modernized Skills Test statewide, providing a more streamlined, transparent and efficient process for Commercial Driver License (CDL) applicants. This modernization ensures that Oklahoma’s commercial drivers are better prepared, helping to reduce drive test hurdles, support workforce development and keep goods moving across the state.

CDL applicants will now experience a consistent and predictable testing process, replacing the previous system that required drivers to prepare for multiple test versions without knowing which one they would take. With a single, standardized drive test and an updated CDL Driver Manual, drivers will have clear expectations, eliminating guesswork and allowing them to focus on essential skills.

“These updates make CDL drive tests more accessible and practical for drivers while ensuring Oklahoma continues to have a strong, prepared workforce,” said Diedra O’Neil, Chief Strategy & Operating Officer of Service Oklahoma. “By reducing unnecessary obstacles, we’re making it easier for commercial drivers to get on the road safely and efficiently—benefiting not just CDL applicants but also businesses and industries that rely on them.”

Other states that have implemented CDL Modernized Skills Test, following guidance from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), have reported higher pass rates and better-prepared drivers. The new test prioritizes real-world, skills-based assessments over mechanical memorization, ensuring applicants can perform the practical maneuvers required for safe commercial driving.

Key CDL Modernization Test Features

  • Clearer Test Guidelines: The updated CDL Driver Manual outlines exactly what applicants will be tested on, allowing for more effective preparation.
  • Shorter Vehicle Inspections: The new pre-trip inspection process cuts inspection time from 40 minutes to just 15 minutes on average, making testing more efficient.
  • Standardized Skills Test: All applicants will now complete four specific skills—forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking and reverse offset backing—replacing the previous system of six unknown maneuvers.
  • Detailed Practice Setup: The new skills test includes precise control skills dimensions and cone setups, allowing applicants to accurately practice in advance.
  • Easier Scheduling & Availability: CDL applicants can now schedule drive tests in advance using Service Oklahoma’s online check-in system, ensuring easy access to testing appointments.

Service Oklahoma has worked closely with both their state-owned testing facilities as well as commercial truck driving schools and third-party examiners to ensure a smooth statewide rollout of Modernized Skills Test. These improvements do not create delays in testing availability—appointments remain open and accessible for applicants ready to test.

The CDL Modernized Skills Test will be fully implemented at Service Oklahoma locations statewide starting March 25, with all CDL tests at commercial truck driving schools transitioning to the new format by April.

How to Schedule a CDL Drive Test
CDL applicants can schedule their Modernized Skills Test in three simple steps:

Step 1: Obtain and Hold Your Commercial Learner Permit (CLP)
Before scheduling a CDL drive test, applicants must:

  • Successfully complete and pass the necessary written tests for the type of CDL they are pursuing.
  • Hold their CLP for a minimum of 14 full days before taking the skills test. Testing can be scheduled for the 15th day after obtaining a CLP.

Step 2: Schedule Your Drive Test Appointment

  • Once eligible, applicants can schedule a CDL drive test appointment online:
  • Visit service.ok.gov/locations and utilize the online check-in system to find nearby locations and book an appointment.
  • Select your service by choosing “Drive Test,” then selecting "CDL Drive Test – Commercial Drivers" to find locations near you. Click “Save my spot” to schedule your appointment. A valid driver license number is required to schedule an appointment.

Step 3: Prepare for Your Test
To ensure success, CDL applicants should:

  • Study the CDL Driver Manual for a full understanding of the Modernized Skills Test requirements.
  • Practice required skills and maneuvers before the test and prepare for the pre-trip inspection, ensuring familiarity with the vehicle components that will be reviewed.
  • Be ready for the full drive test process, which typically takes about two hours.
