New round of opioid abatement grants targets Oklahoma schools

Thursday, October 01, 2026

OKLAHOMA CITY (Oct. 1, 2026) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond is encouraging Oklahoma public schools, technology centers and state higher education institutions to apply for opioid abatement grant funding, with applications opening today.

The grants, awarded by the Opioid Abatement Board, support local efforts to prevent and reduce opioid misuse. Individual awards range from $105,000 to $900,000 over three years, depending on the population and type of the applicant. Collaborative applications submitted by multiple institutions may qualify for more.

“Schools are often the first line of defense in protecting young Oklahomans from the dangers of opioids,” Drummond said. “This funding puts real resources in the hands of educators who see these challenges up close every day. No school should let the application process stand in the way, and our office is ready to help every step of the way.”

The board uses eight priority strategies to guide funding decisions, including school-based prevention programs, naloxone distribution and family skills training.

Applications will be accepted through Nov. 30. The board will review submissions from Dec. 1 through Feb. 28, 2027, with awards expected to be announced in March or April 2027.

The Opioid Abatement Board also recently awarded more than $12 million to 24 cities, counties and other political subdivisions during a special meeting in August. Recipients include the cities of Ada, Bristow, Duncan, Grove, Lawton, Oklahoma City, Stillwater and Tulsa; Carter, Latimer, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Tulsa, Wagoner and Woodward counties; the Grand Gateway Economic Development Association; Norman Regional Hospital Authority; South Western Oklahoma Development Authority; and joint applications from Haskell and LeFlore counties; McCurtain, Choctaw and Pushmataha counties; and Rogers County and the City of Claremore.
