Drummond blasts Mulready for failing to convene hearing on insurance competition

OKLAHOMA CITY (June 8, 2026) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond sharply criticized Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready today for failing to hold a timely hearing to determine whether reasonable competition exists in Oklahoma’s homeowners’ insurance market.

Drummond first demanded the hearing in an April 17 letter that outlined concerns about the unprecedented rise in homeowners’ insurance rates. By law, Mulready had 30 days to hold the hearing or to issue an order denying it. Instead, he announced plans for a September hearing.

“Such a delay directly violates state regulations and does nothing to help Oklahoma insurance consumers,” Drummond said. “It serves only to maintain the status quo where Oklahomans pay some of the highest homeowners’ insurance rates in the country.”

Mulready notified Drummond via a letter on May 20 of his plans to hold the hearing in the fall and restated his belief that the market is competitive. Drummond said the delay is especially troubling because the Insurance Department has already prejudged the level of competition – the very issue the hearing is meant to decide.

In a response the next day, Drummond requested a hearing by June 5 to present evidence that a reasonable degree of competition does not exist in the Oklahoma homeowners’ insurance market. Mulready has not responded.

“Oklahomans deserve an insurance commissioner who protects their interests,” Drummond said. “I will not stop fighting for Oklahoma insurance consumers, and I intend to make the Insurance Department comply with the law.”

Drummond also noted that Mulready’s denial in early April for a hearing requested by Bob Sullivan, who is a candidate for insurance commissioner, was unlawful. Mulready’s order denied the hearing for lack of standing but also found that the market was competitive and that Sullivan had failed to carry his burden of proof, even though he was never afforded the hearing at which to meet it.
