Drummond calls for federal action to protect Oklahoma children from online harm

Tuesday, February 17, 2026

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 17, 2026) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond today urged Congressional leadership to act on behalf of Oklahoma families by passing the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).

He and 39 attorneys general circulated a letter to House and Senate leadership in advance of potential consideration of the House version of KOSA, House Resolution 6484. Drummond and the coalition are concerned that H.R. 6484 could undermine existing and future state laws designed to protect children online and would limit states’ ability to respond to and address new and emerging online harms.

“Oklahoma families should not have to fight billion-dollar tech companies on their own to keep their children safe,” Drummond said. “We have seen the real-world consequences of social media’s addictive design, unchecked algorithms and emerging AI tools that expose minors to serious harm. Congress must act to ensure meaningful, enforceable protections that put the well-being of children ahead of corporate profits. Our kids deserve an online environment that values their safety, their mental health and their future.”

In the letter, the attorneys general expressed support for the Senate version of KOSA, S. 1748, which which enhances and preserves states' authority to enforce and strengthen online protection for minors.

The call for federal legislation follows a series of actions by Drummond aimed at holding social media companies accountable for harms to Oklahoma children. Since 2023 when he took office, Drummond has filed litigation against Meta over alleged deceptive and addictive platform design, pressed companies to address AI-driven risks to minors, and joined multi-state efforts demanding stronger safeguards and transparency.

Drummond is sending this letter to Congressional leadership alongside the attorneys general of the sponsoring states of Connecticut, Hawaii, Ohio and Tennessee who are joined by American Samoa, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, U.S. Virgin Islands and Wyoming.
