Drummond marks one year of training nearly 1,000 Oklahomans in life-saving tool

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 2, 2026) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced today a milestone year of progress since launching the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) training and outreach initiatives.

The LAP is a screening tool used by law enforcement to help identify victims of intimate partner violence who are at the highest risk of homicide, and it is required by Oklahoma state law. The assessment helps identify someone who is at high risk of serious injury or homicide by an intimate partner, then connects them with a local service providers for immediate safety planning and support.

Since the LAP training and outreach program began in April 2025, 968 people across 71 Oklahoma counties have been trained during 46 sessions at conferences, Basic Peace Officer Certification classes and within the CLEET Academy. Trainings have also been held with individual law enforcement agencies, with victim services providers, through CareerTech and in many other settings.

“Every Oklahoman deserves to be safe. The Lethality Assessment Protocol is not just a policy tool; it is a lifeline,” Drummond said. “In just one year, our team has reached nearly 1,000 trained individuals across this state, and each one of them is now better prepared to recognize danger and intervene before tragedy strikes. I am proud of the extraordinary work this team has done, and I am committed to ensuring we reach every corner of Oklahoma with this critical training.”

Looking ahead, the LAP program will expand its focus on underserved and rural communities. To help close that gap, the team recently launched virtual trainings so that law enforcement agencies and community partners across the state can participate regardless of location. Nearly 100 participants have already been trained through these virtual sessions. The LAP team is also preparing a comprehensive report, "The State of the LAP in Oklahoma," documenting the program's first-year progress and milestones, with publication expected in May.

The LAP initiative, funded by two U.S. Department of Justice grants, reflects Drummonds commitment to protecting Oklahomans and ending domestic violence through proactive, evidence-based strategies.
