OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma State Senate today passed Senate Bill 626 requiring businesses to report any security breaches to the Attorney General’s Office if personal information is exposed.
Authored by Sen. Brent Howard and Rep. John Pfeiffer, the measure is designed to strengthen cybersecurity protections and enhance the state’s ability to investigate and prosecute data breaches affecting Oklahoma businesses and residents.
Attorney General Gentner Drummond called the bill critical for public safety and security.
“This legislation is an important step in protecting Oklahoma's citizens and businesses from the ever-growing threat of cybercrime,” he said. “By creating a dedicated team to investigate and prosecute these incidents, we are sending a clear message that Oklahoma is serious about the security of our citizens’ personal information. I appreciate the Senate for passing this critical legislation.”
The bill addresses gaps in the state’s current cybersecurity infrastructure. Under SB 626, businesses need to disclose breaches affecting 500 or more residents, providing the Attorney General's office with crucial information to track and respond to cyber threats.
The Senate passed SB 626 on a 38-6 vote. It now heads to the House for consideration.
