Drummond pushes for federal commitment to combat youth substance abuse
OKLAHOMA CITY (June 4, 2025) – Attorney General Gentner Drummond joined a bipartisan coalition of 38 attorneys general calling on Congress to pass legislation that would directly impact Oklahoma youth vulnerable to substance abuse. The Youth Substance Use Prevention and Awareness Act would provide critical funding for education and outreach programs specifically designed to address the growing crisis.
“Our young people are facing unprecedented exposure to deadly substances, especially with the rising threat of fentanyl," said Drummond. “This bill would provide our state with targeted resources to develop Oklahoma-specific prevention campaigns that speak directly to young people. This legislation gives us the tools to stop addiction and save lives.”
The bipartisan legislation would amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to fund locally tailored prevention efforts across Oklahoma to better reach young people with timely, credible and accessible information.
“It is not just a matter of policy — it is a matter of prevention, education, and hope,” the attorneys general wrote in a letter to U.S. Senate leadership.
