Driving Privileges

When & With Whom You Can Drive

You can drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. while accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old

Eligibility

15 years old

You must be enrolled and receiving instruction in an approved Service Oklahoma Driver Education course and pass the Oklahoma Written Exam.

16 years old

You must pass the Oklahoma Written Exam.

Driver Education is optional if you are 16 years or older.

Driver Education means one of the following:

A prescribed secondary school Driver Education course, as provided for in sections 19-113 through 19-121 of title 70 of the Oklahoma Statutes
A Driver Education course, certified by Service Oklahoma, from a parochial, private, or other nonpublic secondary school
A Commercial Driver Training course, as defined by sections 801 through 808 of title 47 of Oklahoma Statutes
A Parent-Taught Driver Education course, certified by Service Oklahoma (more on parent-taught driver education can be found in the FAQ section below)

Parent-Taught Driver Education is an alternative to conventional Driver Education, where parents and children use Approved Parent-Taught Driver Education Providers recognized by Service Oklahoma.

Student Requirements:

- Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age to apply

- Must have been issued a learner permit to begin the driving portion of training

Parent(s) or Legal Guardian(s) Requirements:

- Must have an active and valid driver license (you will be asked to provide your Driver License number)
- Must not have had driving privileges and/or driver license suspended, canceled, revoked, or denied within the past twelve (12) months
- Must not have a currently active citation
- Must not have been convicted of possession or use of alcohol or drugs within the past twelve (12) months
- Must not have five (5) or more point violations on driving record
- Must not have administrative action by Service Oklahoma or be participating in IDAP

Note

- Permit must be in the student’s possession at all times while performing behind-the-wheel training
- As of Nov. 1, 2023, students will also need to complete the Work Zone Safe online course before testing for their intermediate license.

You may only purchase the Parent Taught Driver Education Provider packet until AFTER you have received the official approval email and number from Service Oklahoma.

Study the Driver’s Manual for your written test

The written exam is a 20-question test that will test you on Oklahoma traffic laws, road rules, road signs, and safe driving practices.

The written test may be waived with Driver Education by providing your completion certificate.
Parent-Taught Driver Education does not qualify to waive the written test.

At Your Visit

Bring the following to your visit:

Primary ID - One primary proof of identification
Social Security number - Physical card is not required.
A parent or legal guardian - If you are under the age of 18, you must have a parent or legal guardian with you. If a parent is not present, you must bring in a notarized Parent Authorization Form to obtain a new License.
Proof of Purchase, Enrollment Contract, or Completion Certificate - Bring in your enrollment contract or completion certificate from the Commercial or public Driver Education school which you are attending or have attended.

Note

If you are 16 years old or older, Driver Education is optional. If you have completed Driver Education, please bring the documentation to waive the written test.

To take the written test before turning 16 using parent-taught driver education, you must have the Parent-Taught Affidavit approval number and proof of purchase from the Parent Taught Program provider.

Parent-Taught Driver Education does not qualify to waive the written test.

If you pass the written and vision tests, you will given a temporary paper permit to use until you receive your Learner Permit in the mail.

Fees

Passing the Written Test

The fee to print and issue a Learner Permit is $42.50. Please be prepared to pay this fee.

Failing the Written Test

If you do not pass the written test, there will be a $4.00 fee added to the issuance fee for each failed test that can be paid upon passing.

Note

There is a $25.00 fee associated with tests taken at Career Tech Testing Centers and the applicant will still have to visit a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office for the vision test and to be issued the permit.

Are You REAL ID Ready?

Beginning May 7, 2025, a REAL ID compliant Driver License or ID card, or a valid federal identification document (i.e. U.S. Passport) will be required for you to fly within the U.S. or visit a federal facility.

After Your Visit

Once you receive your permit, but before taking the drive test and graduating to an intermediate license, you must:

Be at least 16 years old
Have held a Learner Permit for at least 180 days
Have had at least 50 hours (including 10 hours at night) of behind-the-wheel training from a licensed driver that is at least 21 years old and has been licensed for at least 2 years
Have no traffic convictions on your driving record
Work Zone Safe Course Completion Certificate – online course available for free here

A certificate of completion of the free Oklahoma WorkZone Safe Course is required to receive an Intermediate License under the age of 18.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are between the ages of 15 - 18 years old, you must apply for a Learner Permit.

If you are 18+ years old, you do not need to receive a Learner Permit in order to take the drive test. However, if you choose to get a driving permit for driving practice, you will need to hold it for at least 30 days before applying for an unrestricted license.

You can re-take the drive test up to three times, each time at least one day apart or as instructed by the examiner.

If you fail the third drive test, you will have to wait 30 days before taking the test a fourth time.

The fourth attempt and any thereafter should be taken no more than one time every 30 days.

*The 30 days starts the day after the last drive test date.

Parent Taught Driver Education is an alternative to conventional Driver Education that is recognized by Service Oklahoma. It is offered as correspondence study through Approved Parent Taught Driver Education Providers.

The student must be at least 15 years of age in order to be eligible to start the classroom portion of the course. The student cannot start any behind the wheel training until they have a Learner Permit.

Service Oklahoma does not accept any driving logs. Please refer to the requirements of your parent-taught provider within the course. Service Oklahoma will require the parent to verify that the permit holder has completed fifty (50) hours of driving including a minimum of ten (10) hours of driving at night from a licensed driver through the Affidavit of Driver Training form.
