What is a Long Range Plan?

Developing the LRTP is a multimodal planning effort that looks at the state’s highways and bridges, as well as rail, ports, aviation connections, transit and bicycle/pedestrian facilities.

The 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) is Oklahoma’s roadmap for creating a safe, sustainable and efficient transportation system for the next 25 years. The plan takes a multimodal approach, incorporating highways, rail, aviation, public transit and pedestrian facilities to ensure the state’s transportation network meets future needs.

Developed with input from stakeholders across the state, the LRTP identifies key priorities such as safety, economic growth and environmental sustainability. By aligning with federal goals and utilizing public feedback, the LRTP ensures Oklahoma is ready for the transportation challenges ahead.

Why is It Important?

The LRTP plays a vital role in planning for Oklahoma’s future transportation needs. By focusing on public input, the LRTP promotes safe, efficient and sustainable transportation systems that improve the quality of life for all residents. Key reasons why the LRTP is essential:

  • Improves Quality of Life: Plans for safe, reliable and modern transportation options.
  • Supports Resilience: Plans for infrastructure that withstands natural disasters and technological changes.
  • Enhances Safety: Prioritizes strategies to reduce traffic fatalities and protect vulnerable road users.

Key Priorities of the LRTP

Safety

The plan focuses on making ODOT safer for everyone — whether you're driving, walking, biking or using public transit.

Connectivity

The LRTP works to better connect people and places by improving roads and other transportation routes, making it easier to travel across the state.

System Preservation

ODOT ensures that Oklahoma’s roads, bridges and transportation systems are well-maintained and kept in good condition for years to come.

Quality of Life

The LRTP aims to improve everyday life by providing policies to address access to jobs, schools, healthcare and recreation, making it easier for people to get where they need to go.
