Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that can be passed from one person to another during sexual contact. They can lead to psychological and physical discomfort and severe complications such as infertility, premature births, blindness, and even death. Many sexually transmitted diseases do not have any symptoms. As a result, many infections are transmitted unknowingly to others and are unreported.

Some of the common symptoms of STDs include:

• Sores, bumps or blisters near the genitals or mouth
• Burning or pain when urinating
• Discharge from the penis, vagina or rectum

If you have experienced symptoms, or suspect that you have been exposed to an STD, please contact the Health Department or your physician’s office to schedule an appointment for testing. 

The Harper County Health Department provides free testing and education for the following STDs:

Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, HIV/AIDS, Genital Warts and Herpes

Treatment will be provided when possible and referrals will be made as needed for treatment that the health department cannot provide.  At this time, the health department does not treat: HIV, Herpes, Genital Warts, Pubic Lice (crabs)
