Family Planning (Birth Control)

The Family Planning program provides individuals with the means and opportunity to determine the number and spacing of their children , to make informed decisions regarding being healthy, and making good lifestyle choices.  Protecting against unplanned pregnancy also prevents some complications that may be associated with pregnancy.

The Oklahoma Family Planning Program is devoted to providing family planning services to males and females of reproductive age.

Family Planning services are provided by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse-Certified Nurse Practitioner (APRN-CNP) and Public Health Nurses.  

Appointments are only available at regional hub locations including Enid, Woodward, Ponca City and Stillwater.

Services for women of childbearing age may include:

  • fully or partially unclothed physical examination
  • height, weight and blood pressure check
  • pap smears
  • breast exams
  • instructions on self-breast exams
  • screening, testing, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV
  • birth control
  • pregnancy diagnosis
  • counseling and referrals

Services for men of childbearing age may include:

  • physical examination, including height, weight, and blood pressure
  • testicular exam and instructions in testicular self-exams
  • screening, testing, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV
  • education and counseling on methods to prevent pregnancy
  • Counseling and referrals.

Birth Control

Family planning education/counseling is provided on the following topics:

  • methods of birth control
  • tubal ligation
  • pregnancy testing
  • follow up on method of birth control

Methods of birth control provided by the health department * 

  • Oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
  • Depo-Provera injection
  • Ortho-Evra patch
  • Intra-uterine device (IUD)
  • Intra-uterine system (IUS)
  • Diaphragms
  • Latex Condoms
  • Emergency contraception (Plan B)
  • NuvaRing
  • Nexplanon
  • Natural family planning

*Some methods may not be available at all times

Cost
Family Planning services are offered on a sliding scale. A client's percentage to pay is based on income. However, you will not be denied services because of your inability to pay.

SoonerPlan
Financial assistance is available through SoonerPlan. SoonerPlan is a program made available through the Oklahoma Health Care Authority that will cover family planning services. This includes exams, birth control, tubal ligation and vasectomies. To apply for this program please bring Photo ID and Birth Certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who is eligible for Family Planning Services?
A: Any woman of childbearing age, who has not had a hysterectomy or tubal ligation, or any man that would like to prevent pregnancy are eligible to receive birth control through Family Planning.

Q: Can I get a pregnancy test at the Health Department?
A: Yes, we offer pregnancy testing. We provide proof of pregnancy letters for Medicaid and make appropriate referrals for our clients.

Q: What proof of income do I need to bring to my family planning appointment?
A: You may bring one of the following items as proof of income. 1. Two pay stubs for everyone working in the household (within the last 90 days) 2. Recent leave and earning statement. 3. Unemployment letter/notice. 4. Current disability assistance document (SSI) 5. Written Statement of financial support. 6. Signed letter from employer stating gross income. 7. Letter from DHS showing current eligibility for TANF or Food Stamps.

Q: What if I cannot pay my family planning bill?
