Supt. Walters has Expanded Literacy Support Across the State: Through Strong Readers Act and Amira Platform
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Under Superintendent Ryan Walter, the Oklahoma State Department of Education is strengthening literacy efforts across the state by providing districts with the Amira reading platform at no cost. This initiative supports the Strong Readers Act, which requires schools to screen and monitor the reading progress of students in grades K–3 and share results with families. By expanding access to Amira, Supt. Walters is ensuring schools have evidence-based tools to identify student needs early, track growth, and provide families with clear updates.
“Our mission is simple: every child in Oklahoma should be able to read on or above grade level, and we will give our schools the tools to make that happen,” said State Superintendent Ryan Walters. “By providing the Amira platform for free, we are removing red tape, giving teachers more time to teach, and ensuring parents are back in control of their child's education.”
Amira serves as the statewide screener for grades K–8 and offers progress monitoring with reports, while Amira Tutor gives students in grades K–5 personalized practice on essential literacy skills. These tools reduce paperwork for teachers, free up instructional time, and provide consistent support for students beyond grade 3. By removing financial barriers, OSDE is helping districts meet Strong Readers Act requirements while giving all Oklahoma students the opportunity to build strong reading skills.
