Oklahoma State Board of Education Approves New Rules to Enhance School Safety, Transparency, and Patriotism
Oklahoma City, Okla – Superintendent Ryan Walters and the Oklahoma State Board of Education today approved a series of new administrative rules aimed at creating safer, more transparent schools while promoting the values that shape our nation. These measures, which now move to the state legislature for final approval, are designed to put students and families first.
"These new rules represent a significant step forward for Oklahoma schools," said Superintendent Ryan Walters. "By increasing transparency, strengthening student safety, and instilling foundational American principles, we are ensuring that our schools are better equipped to serve students and families across the state."
The approved rules include the following key updates:
- Enhancing Enrollment Transparency
Schools will now track the number of enrolled students whose parents are unable to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status. This will help educators better understand and address the needs of their student populations and provide important insight into how to best budget and allocate important resources. - Protecting Students from Abuse
Schools will be required to report when an employee resigns or is not rehired due to concerns about child abuse or neglect. This rule reinforces Oklahoma’s commitment to protecting children and prioritizing their safety. - Promoting Patriotism
Schools will establish clear policies ensuring the American flag is prominently displayed and respected on every campus. The importance of the Pledge of Allegiance will also be reaffirmed as a cornerstone of fostering American values. - Strengthening Transportation Safety
New standards for school bus drivers will ensure higher levels of professionalism and accountability, providing a safer and more consistent transportation system for students. - Improving Educator Knowledge of Foundational Principles
Teachers will be required to take a written test based on the U.S. Naturalization Test. This ensures Oklahoma educators have a strong understanding of the principles that form the foundation of our nation. - Increasing Student Transfer Transparency
Schools will provide consistent reporting on student transfers, enabling parents to make more informed decisions regarding their children’s education.
These updates underscore the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s commitment to fostering accountability, celebrating national values, and creating stronger schools for every child.
