Invites OK High School Students to submit designs for historic coin honoring U.S. Navy’s newest submarine

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters is encouraging high school students across the state to participate in the USS OKLAHOMA SSN 802 Challenge Coin Design Competition. Yesterday, he emailed Oklahoma Superintendents asking them to share the competition with their students. This initiative offers students a unique opportunity to contribute to the legacy of the U.S. Navy's newest submarine, which is scheduled to join the Navy fleet in 2027.

"This is an incredible opportunity for our students to take part in history," said Walters. "The USS OKLAHOMA SSN 802 will carry the proud legacy of our state across the world’s oceans, and I encourage our students to showcase their talent and state pride by designing a coin that embodies the spirit of Oklahoma and our military heroes."

As part of the commissioning process, students, artists, and designers across Oklahoma are invited to submit original designs for the official challenge coin that will commemorate the submarine’s commissioning. The competition is open to Oklahomans of high school age and older, encouraging participants to create an original design for the official USS OKLAHOMA SSN 802 challenge coin. This coin will be presented to sponsors, crew members, and distinguished guests, symbolizing the honor and service associated with the submarine. The winning design should reflect Oklahoma’s rich history, heritage, and the strength of our military.

The submission deadline is July 4, 2025, and all designs must be submitted electronically.
