Emergency Reading Initiative Expansion for Tulsa Public Schools

Tuesday, March 05, 2024

Oklahoma City, Okla – Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) and the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) are immediately expanding the partnership for high intensity tutoring to produce necessary end of the school year reading improvements. The district is participating in the high dosage tutoring program with OSDE providing approximately $500,000 for 94 highquality tutors trained in the science of reading. These tutors are exceptional educators addressing the highest need areas. The stipend is in addition to their existing salaries.

“This is a huge step in getting this district back on track,” said State Superintendent Ryan Walters.  “I am pleased that Superintendent Johnson has shown herself to be willing to be innovative with solutions.  We must get TPS kids to read and this is a much-needed step in this process.”

“We understand the challenge before us, and we are directing every available resource to make gains for our students,” said Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Ebony Johnson.  “With this new effort and ongoing commitment from OSDE, we continue to take aggressive action to make sure each of our kids in Tulsa have the best education possible.”

Both the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Tulsa Public Schools have worked closely over the last year to ensure that every kid has the opportunity and ability to read. This is one of many programs that have been initiated in the effort to improve academic outcomes.
